There have been conflicting explanations as to exactly what they are and how they’re formed, but the halo-appearing visual effect that has been forming at night over helicopters have been named after two Allied soldiers killed in action (KIA), as reported by The Daily Mail (of London, England) on July 26, 2013.  Called one of the most “beautiful things you’ll ever see in a war zone,” photojournalist Michael Yon has taken a number of photographs of Allied helicopters in the Afghan Theater of Operations showing what appear to be angelic halos which Yon has tagged the Kopp-Etchells Effect. The naming of the visual effect is in tribute to Corporals Ben Kopp (U.S. Army) and Joseph Etchells (British Army) who were both killed in combat in the Taliban stronghold of Helmand province of southern Afghanistan during the Summer of 2009. I’ve seen this lots of time. No mystery at all. If you’ve ever been in the military I’m sure you’ve seen this while waiting to board your bird. The blades are spinning at a high rate. There is a lot of static electricity in the air. That’s why they make you use static lines when conducting sling load and air assault missions so you don’t get a static jolt. The spinning blades are just stirring up the static and they are making contact with each other wich explainsevthe hallo’s.

I appreciate the hard work you put into this website, but over-hyped, sensationalistic headlines such as this absolutely KILL your credibility. The last thing we believers need is balderdash like this, which undermines any progress you’ve made to share the Truth. Do your due diligence-RESEARCH-then get back to basics. Stuff like this is an insult to your readers intelligence. Keep insulting your readers, and pretty soon you won’t have any readers to insult…

Hey mexcrement…..hope you take the big gulp next time you and your other grasshopper tonks swim the river.

  7. Actually, the blades on the helicopters are going through dust, sand what not, and sliding so to speak across the blades causing sparks, in which deteriorates the blades quickly.so blades are replaced along with engine parts do to the abrasions.

  8. Michael says:

Its friction from he blades cutting thru the air…

  9. Neil Roy says:

They are obviously just the blades of the chopper, a light on them is causing it.

  10. Choppers flying around really fast to make perfect circles? I would have to see that to believe it. Personally, I dont think so.

  11. Lyn Leahz says:

Hey Pastor..these weren’t signs in the heavens..this is a tribute to soldiers..it is the choppers on a helicopter circling around really fast at night making a halo effect in honor of some soldiers who were killed. God bless you.
