Possible Cancer Cluster at Tyson Plant: USDA Poultry Inspector Speaks Out Against Hazardous Chemical Use‏

Workers at one plant in Corydon, Ind. are getting sick. Several have been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Now, state health officials are trying to determine if there could be a cancer cluster associated with the plant. “I always start shaking when I do this,” Bill Howard said, pouring a blend of nutrients into a syringe attached to a tube which goes directly into his stomach. “Every two hours. I have four or five cans a day. “ Bill was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in December of 2011, while he was working in the maintenance department at the Tyson chicken processing plant in Corydon, Indiana. “My life’s completely changed,” Howard said, choking back tears. Bill is not the only Tyson plant worker diagnosed with that type of cancer. Debra Brooks’ husband got sick in December 2010. “Another employee that he works with noticed he had a knot in the side of his neck,” Brooks said. Her husband had to have part of his neck removed and now also relies on feeding and oxygen tubes to survive. “I have watched my husband on his knees taking his fists, hitting the floor while he’s puking blood all over the place, trying to make the pain stop,” she said. “When it first started he weighed 245 and he went down to like 160,” Sharon Paris said of her husband Irvin. “It was because he couldn’t eat. Every time he ate, he would choke.” Irvin died in August of 2011, nine months after he was diagnosed with the same cancer. “He was the one who pumped the chemicals for sanitation to clean with,” Paris said. Sharon worked at the same plant. Dr. John Hamm is an oncologist and Assistant Director of the Norton Cancer Institute. He says the type of cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, is very rare. “There are probably a few hundred in the state of Kentucky a year, at the most. Probably less than that,” Hamm said. Hamm says there can be many possible causes of the disease, including lifestyle issues, like smoking, drinking and family history. “If you have a large number in a short period of time, it probably raises an eyebrow and is worth looking into to see if there’s some causative agent,” Hamm said. The Harrison County Health Department has asked the Indiana Department of Public Health to look into the cases to determine if they represent what’s called a “cancer cluster.” “It can be a very entailed and detailed investigation and can take a lot of time sometimes,” Harrison County Health Department Administrator Tony Combs said. Combs says a cancer cluster is a greater than expected number of cases within a group of people, a geographic area or a period of time. More

DAYS OF LOT: Gay porn priest is appointed to new parish in Clogherhead, County Louth

A priest who flashed gay porn images onto a screen at a First Communion meeting has been appointed to a new parish in County Louth. Fr Martin McVeigh shocked parents when the images appeared at the meeting of primary school parents in Pomeroy, County Tyrone, last year. Now parishioners in Clogherhead in County Louth have been told that Fr McVeigh is their new parish priest – and some aren’t happy with the appointment. The Irish Sun newspaper reports that several parishioners have raised concerns over Fr McVeigh’s new job just a year after his controversial faux pas. The cleric took a sabbatical after insisted the photos, contained on a memory stick, were not his. One County Louth parishioner told the Irish Sun: “He wants us to give him a chance and he seems to be sincere but we are still very angry at the way this happened.” Cardinal Sean Brady has told the parishioners of his decision to appoint Fr McVeigh to the role which he will take up later this month. DAYS OF LOT: EU Appeals to Russia Not to Introduce Gay Propaganda Law

The European Union appealed to Russia on Sunday not to introduce a law banning so-called “gay propaganda,” the EU said. Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, intends to pass a law by the end of the current session (mid-July) banning dissemination of information among minors promoting homosexuality. Amendments will be made on May 26-27, after which a working group will compile the draft law along with representatives of civil society and gay rights activists. “The EU called on Russia to refrain from adopting federal legislation on ‘homosexual propaganda,’ which it believed could increase discrimination and violence against LGBTI individuals,” the EU said in a statement on its website. The statement referred to the results of a meeting on May 17 in Brussels between Russian and EU diplomats on human rights issues. The statement also said the “EU confirmed its intention to continue to follow closely developments affecting NGOs as a whole in the Russian Federation and expressed among others its concerns at the fining of election monitoring organisation Golos and at the charges brought against ADC Memorial in St Petersburg.” More

AP CEO calls Justice Department’s records seizure unconstitutional

The president and chief executive officer of The Associated Press on Sunday called the government’s secret seizure of two months of reporters’ phone records “unconstitutional” and said the news cooperative had not ruled out legal action against the Justice Department. Gary Pruitt, in his first television interviews since it was revealed the Justice Department subpoenaed phone records of AP reporters and editors, said the move already has had a chilling effect on journalism. Mr. Pruitt said the seizure has made sources less willing to talk to AP journalists and, in the long term, could limit Americans’ information from all news outlets. Mr. Pruitt told CBS‘ “Face the Nation” that the government has no business monitoring the AP’s newsgathering activities. “And if they restrict that apparatus … the people of the United States will only know what the government wants them to know, and that’s not what the framers of the Constitution had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment,” he said. China army developing advanced robot soldiers

China is developing robots with a lot more capabilities for battle, “information acquisition, command and control, and collaborative support,” official sources said. But the official Chinese media is saying its effort is different from the manner in which military robots have been developed in the US. “The Chinese military has its own orientation and direction, and is very different from western militaries, such as the United States Armed Forces, in developing digitalized troops,” an official military publication said. It said the Chinese military cannot develop large-scale and complete test troops like the US military but “focuses on the key links in the building of digitalized troops, and synchronize the development of mechanization and informatization”. FROM BAD TO WORSE: Deadly H7N9 virus develops drug-resistance to Tamiflu

TAIPEI, Taiwan - The only H7N9 patient so far in Taiwan was carrying two strains of the same virus, with one being drug resistant and the other not, making it tricky to treat to him, doctors said. Huang Li-min, a doctor from National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), explained that it was possible the avian flu virus was not drug resistant when the patient was first infected, but mutated later to become resistant to Tamiflu. With Tamiflu failing, NTUH later switched to another intravenous drug, Huang said. Because of the presence of the two strains simultaneously, it was difficult for doctors to determine how much the virus’ drug resistance had undermined the therapy Chou Chi-hao, deputy director-general of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), said it is natural for viruses to mutate, saying the H1N1 flu strain mutated after infecting human beings. But Huang said H7N9 has limited chances of human-to-human transmission through respiratory secretions because the virus has difficulty surviving the environments of human upper respiratory systems. Patients do not have symptoms of a runny nose or sneezing. The patient, surnamed Lee, got sick on April 12, three days after returning from a business trip in China. His condition was initially critical, but has improved much. He has already been transferred from the intensive care unit to an ordinary ward at NTUH. The findings by the NTUH and CDC about H7N9 are to be published in a local medical journal next month. Resistance is of concern in the scenario of an influenza pandemic (Wong and Yuen 2005), and may be more likely to develop in avian influenza than seasonal influenza due to the potentially longer duration of infection by novel viruses. ALERT: Tension mounting on Pacific Plate: region of Kamchatka rocked by scores of earthquakes

KAMCHATKA – A massive earthquake swarm has occurred in the region of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia. More than 20 earthquakes have struck the region in the last 22 hours- the strongest of which was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake, which rattled the seafloor at a depth of 16.5 km deep. The latest seismic flare-up along this region reflects growing agitation on one of the planet’s largest tectonic plates- the Pacific plate. Increasing seismic volatility along this region of Kamchatka could have serious ramifications for every tectonic plate that comes into contact with the Pacific plate- from the South Pacific to South America. A similar, more intense earthquake swarm occurred along the periphery of the Pacific Plate near the Santa Cruz Islands in February of this year. Is the Pacific plate on the verge of a large-scale change?

The geology of the region: The Kuril-Kamchatka arc extends approximately 2,100 km from Hokkaido, Japan, along the Kuril Islands and the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula to its intersection with the Aleutian arc near the Commander Islands, Russia. It marks the region where the Pacific plate subducts into the mantle beneath the Okhotsk micro-plate, part of the larger North American plate. This subduction is responsible for the generation of the Kuril Islands chain, active volcanoes located along the entire arc, and the deep offshore Kuril-Kamchatka trench. Relative to a fixed North America plate, the Pacific plate is moving towards the northwest at a rate that increases from 75 mm/year near the northern end of the arc to 83 mm/year in the south. Plate motion is predominantly convergent along the Kuril-Kamchatka arc with obliquity increasing towards the southern section of the arc. The subducting Pacific plate is relatively old, particularly adjacent to Kamchatka where its age is greater than 100 Ma. Consequently, the Wadati-Benioff zone is well defined to depths of approximately 650 km. The central section of the arc is comprised of an oceanic island arc system, which differs from the continental arc systems of the northern and southern sections. Oblique convergence in the southern Kuril arc results in the partitioning of stresses into both trench-normal thrust earthquakes and trench-parallel strike-slip earthquakes, and the westward translation of the Kuril forearc. This westward migration of the Kuril forearc currently results in collision between the Kuril arc in the north and the Japan arc in the south, resulting in the deformation and uplift of the Hidaka Mountains in central Hokkaido. The Kuril-Kamchatka arc is considered one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Deformation of the overriding North America plate generates shallow crustal earthquakes, whereas slip at the subduction zone interface between the Pacific and North America plates generates interplate earthquakes that extend from near the base of the trench to depths of 40 to 60 km. At greater depths, Kuril-Kamchatka arc earthquakes occur within the subducting Pacific plate and can reach depths of approximately 650 km. Extinction Protocol
