DAYS OF LOT – Father upset with terms on school’s sexual education poster

WARNING: This story contains terms that some may find offensive or inappropriate, reader and viewer discretion is recommended.

. – A father said if his 13-year-old daughter hadn’t taken a picture of a questionable public poster and shown him, he’d never have known the content. Now that he knows, he’s not happy. Mark Ellis says his daughter goes to Hocker Grove Middle School in the Shawnee Mission School District. She was so shocked by what she recently saw on a poster at school, that she took a picture of it home and showed her parents. Her dad initially assumed it was a student prank, until he called the school and found  it was part of the curriculum. “Why would you put it in front of 13-year-old students?” he asked. He thought the poster, which lists things like “oral sex” and “grinding,” might’ve been a prank until he contacted the school principal. He was told it was a teaching material. But Ellis is now concerned that what’s on this poster is being taught to his daughter in school “It upsets me. And again, it goes back to who approved this? You know this had to pass through enough hands that someone should have said, ‘Wait a minute, these are 13-year-old kids, we do not need to be this in-depth with this sexual education type of program,’” he said. District spokeswoman, Leigh Anne Neal, says the poster needs to be viewed in the context of a bigger curriculum, which she calls abstinence-based for students in middle school.
“The poster that you reference is actually part of our middle school health and science materials, and so it is a part of our district approved curriculum,” Neal said. “However the item is meant to be part of a lesson, and so certainly as a standalone poster without the context of a teacher led discussion, I could see that there might be some cause for concern.” She said that the approved curriculum is in line with what other schools around the country do as well. “The curriculum it is a part of, it aligns with national standards around those topics, and it’s part of our curriculum in the school district,” she said. But Ellis thinks if that’s the case, the curriculum needs to change. “This has nothing to do with abstinence or sexual reproduction, actually, a lot of these things,” he said. “I would like to see that this particular portion of the curriculum is removed from the school.” And if the curriculum doesn’t change, Ellis plans to remove his daughter from the sexual education classes. Oh naive parents. The middle school kids already know all the terms and have experience with them. You missed your chance to have your “talk”. TOO LATE!

    • There l disagree totally, maybe in your country but here in South Africa most children who come from well brought and moral families, disciplined homes, and in the social circles that we mix with , We as parents make sure that we know where our children are after school and are even more careful with whom our children are friends with and with whom they mix with after school and weekends and we don’t allow to wonder all over the place at night, we also carefully check what our children watch on TV as well as keep a close check on what they are watching or the sites that they open up on internet. Most of our children are not exposed to incidents nor have the ”EXPERIENCE” as you put it. l am not saying that it doesn’t happen here in S Africa but l can assure you that the majority of our middle school children between the ages of 9 – 14 who come from good homes are not exposed to the explicit sexual activities that are mentioned. Many of us are teachers and none of this explicit material is available in our junior schools, We speak openly with our children when the time arises and they start asking the relevant questions, just as our parents did with us.. Yes we do have a lower class and some of their behaviour and language can be disgusting but most of us have taught our children from very small not to associate with them. Many of us as mothers chose to work from home so that we can look after and keep an eye on our children after school, those that we know who choose to work or have to work outside of their homes send their children to grandparents after school or they attend After-school, which is run by many of the schools. We still have prayers and religious education in most of our schools and aftercare centres with the permission of the parents. America has and is fast becoming a totally Godless country and what we see and hear from many various different mediums and has a very undisciplined young generation, actually 2 generations.
My friends and l regularly have homes filled with young children and young people, which we monitor very discreetly but consistently and on the rare occasion that we as parents have the odd child or young adult visit and whose behaviour such as manners, speech as well as moral behaviour is not acceptable, that person is not welcome back and we explain to our children and young adults why and because of the consistent way in which we have brought up our children , they tend to listen to what we say. None of us are ”naive” as you say…

  4. l agree completely with the Father, this is a totally disgusting and UNNECCESSARY,ACTUALLY VERY INAPPROPRIATE POSTER for a middle school, when most children shouldn’t even be discussing sex except with their parents or under very controlled conditions.
